I heard this electronic song in 2015 and fell in love with it.
The other day, driving down the highway and randomly listening to music i’ve stumbled across a radio program playing a few versions of it.
I don’t know why but it makes me emotional, and I found out it’s about a calf on its way to be slaughtered.
Turns out it’s originally a Yiddish (east european jewish language mixing German, Hebrew, and other languages) song from the early 40s (wikipedia entry here) and has been covered many times since.
I really enjoy all these versions:
Yiddish version:
Hebrew version:
Joan Baez’s version:
Donovan’s version:
And finally, the electronic version by the Polish musician/producer “Pysh”:
This post is dedicated to Nishtha Aggarwal and to my deceased grandmother, Haya Dickerman
Ahhhhh, the song (the electronic one) that you always treat us with at your weekend workshops! I will always think of you (and dancing in Second Story) as soon as I hear the intro of that song. Xx
