Donna Donna – one of my favorite songs

I heard this electronic song in 2015 and fell in love with it.

The other day, driving down the highway and randomly listening to music i’ve stumbled across a radio program playing a few versions of it.

I don’t know why but it makes me emotional, and I found out it’s about a calf on its way to be slaughtered.

Turns out it’s originally a Yiddish (east european jewish language mixing German, Hebrew, and other languages) song from the early 40s (wikipedia entry here) and has been covered many times since.

I really enjoy all these versions:

Yiddish version:

Hebrew version:

Joan Baez’s version:

Donovan’s version:

And finally, the electronic version by the Polish musician/producer “Pysh”:

This post is dedicated to Nishtha Aggarwal and to my deceased grandmother, Haya Dickerman

  1. Ahhhhh, the song (the electronic one) that you always treat us with at your weekend workshops! I will always think of you (and dancing in Second Story) as soon as I hear the intro of that song. Xx
